Ken Kaneki is a typical 18-year-old college student who enjoys reading. His seemingly routine existence until the day he met Rize Kamishiro, a girl she just met, at a caf he frequents. He was then transported to the hospital in severe condition after narrowly surviving an assault by Rize, who turns out to be a ghoul, before being hit by a falling i-beam at a construction site. He is subsequently implanted with one of Rize's organs when his organs are no longer recoverable, transforming him into a half-human/half-ghoul hybrid. He tries to conceal his ghoul identity, always battling his ghoul side while attempting to live as a regular human person.
