23. The Cat in the Shopping Bag, and Other Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark These books contain a variety of stories about theft and the punishment one deems appropriate for the crime. In this scene, a woman accidentally runs over a cat, which she then places in a shopping bag to bury when she gets home. However, when she parks her car to run the errands she had planned, another woman steals the bag, assuming it is full of recently purchased items. The first woman follows the second to a diner, where she pauses to see what fortune shell discovers in the bag. Of course, she faints as a result of the jokes, but that isn't enough punishment. The woman who ran over the cat makes a point of following the ambulance that was called for the second woman in order to deliver the bag, because she doesn't want that poor lady to lose her belongings. How cunning.

A young boy was digging near the garden's edge when he noticed a large toe. He attempted to pick it up, but it had become stuck to something. So he gave it a good jerk, and it flew off into his hand. Then he heard something groan and fled. The youngster brought his toe into the kitchen and showed it to his mother. She commented, "It looks nice and plump." I'll put it in the soup and have it for dinner. That night, his father carved the toe into three pieces, and each of them received one. They then did the dishes and went to bed when it got dark.
This is the one to purchase. Stephen Gammell's talent for illustrating the most terrifying images you've ever seen is unrivaled, especially by someone as uncreative as Brett Helquist. Helquist is a fantastic artist, but he lacks Gammell's artistic impulse and certainly has a poor understanding of psychology and what it takes to scare someone. Helquist tends to depict'scenes' that are happening on the page, whereas Gammell almost always portrays you, the reader, as the would-be victim. A strangled-to-death girl, shadowy figures in the mist. Helquist also enjoys being overt and interpreting to an exasperating degree. The amount of detail in his illustrations detracts from their impact. Gammell's approach is almost minimalist, forcing you to enter the darkest and most demented recesses of your own mind to fill in the gaps and complete the story. You never feel threatened when looking at Helquist's drawings. Don't get the re-release of the book; instead, get the original.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark Book Illustrations
It's been a few years since the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trilogy was revamped, with Brett Helquist's tamer take on Alvin Schwartz's collection of urban legends, folktales, and general creepiness replacing Stephen Gammell's art/living nightmares. People were outraged, but now that some time has passed, we should be able to assess it objectively. Was the change beneficial?
UPDATE (1/3/12): It turns out that the publisher has taken the original Stephen Gammell editions out of print! At least, at the time of this update. Prices for new and used copies are already rising in response to the altered art on sites like Amazon.com (a new copy of the Treasury edition from a third-party seller is selling for $50 at the lowest).
HarperCollins replaced the drawings when Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was reissued for its 30th anniversary in 2011. To address some of the criticisms leveled at the books, a new artist, Brett Helquist (A Series of Unfortunate Events), was hired. The images that kept children awake at night were replaced with much gentler illustrations to accompany the stories. The backlash was immediate. How could anyone censor such heinous designs? Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a text-and-illustration collaboration, and separating them would be like stepping on one's childhood. Amazon reviews revealed customers' dissatisfaction with the changes: These may be more appropriate for your (boring) children, but if you want to relive your childhood terrors, you'll have to look elsewhere, according to one. You'll be missing out on a big part of what made these books so great in the first place, according to another. Websites began displaying the new images alongside the originals, and it was difficult to be excited about the difference. The Gammell drawings are both beautiful and terrifying. Thankfully, the books were reissued in a collection with the original artwork in 2017.
Is Something Wrong? is another example of Gammell taking a simple description and turning it into something far worse than you could have imagined. In this case, it's a massive floating creature with a massive head, melting eyeballs, and an odd number of limbs that look like tree roots. Despite the grotesque imagery, this creature simply asks, "Is something wrong?" as the subject of the story flees. Even though he is hideous to look at, he is extremely polite! 1.
