After Isaac had finished blessing him and Jacob had hardly left his father's sight, his brother Esau returned from hunting. 31 He, too, cooked some delectable cuisine and delivered it to his father. Then he pleaded to him, âMy father, please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may bless me.â 32 âWho are you?â inquired Isaac, his father.

Isaac shook violently: Isaac was distressed because he realized he had attempted to box God in, to derail God's purpose, and God had defeated him. He learned that if he attempted to reject God's will, even if he didn't like it, he would always be defeated. And he discovered that, despite his arrogance against God's plan, God's will was wonderful.
It is difficult to interpret Isaac's blessing to Esau in any other manner than as a rejection of God's will revealed in the prophecy. All that resulted from Isaac's "blessing" on Esau was the reinforcement of a mentality inside Esau, resentment, and more estrangement from his brother. The ultimate consequence was Esauâs separation from the Covenant, subsequent warfare between Jacobâs descendants and Esauâs descendants, and eventually the removal of Esauâs inheritance from the earth. It didn't have to be that way. God had made no warning that Esau would be excluded from the covenant, nor that being governed over by Jacob's offspring would be degrading. All of this was caused by Isaac's mistaken love for his favored son. It wasn't long, though, until Isaac was at least reconciled to the reality that the Covenant was being passed on to Jacob; when Isaac sent Jacob out to Haran to choose a bride, his words were the Covenant's own.

These two men, Isaac, the father, and Esau, the son, were thinking furiously as they attempted to figure out what had occurred, and now they were wondering: What will we do? One major issue was that they had not incorporated the Lord in their aspirations and plans. We saw that God had planned for the blessing to be Jacob's from before the birth of either son, but as is so frequently the case with humans, these men had different ideas. The one son belatedly decided to seek the blessing but did not consult the Lord about it, and the other son also did not consult the Lord but sought it via deception. Jacob got the blessing, but he would face a lot of difficulties because of his deceitful relatives. We seek the benefit that comes from and through Christ Jesus, Father. We admit that we have not always prayed when we should and that we have lacked faith in You. We repent of our sin and turn to You today. Cleanse us of the deception in our hearts and lives. We put our confidence in You, Lord, and we trust in You right now. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
