Similar to what one could perceive on a psychedelic trip. Acid, mushrooms, salvia, and perhaps skunk weed (hey you smoke enough of that...). Can be used to refer to visuals like as those seen when tripping (patterns, fractals, M.C. Escher Robert Crumb drawings), music that invokes sensations of trippin', and even heady ideas similar to those thought while tripping. Okay, truly, if you haven't tripped, you haven't tripped and have no idea what it's like. Period. There should be a rule against youngsters spreading the term "trippy" around like candy, but millions of Americans don't obey every single law anyway, crimes and all. Actually, I observe the rules and do not use marijuana; instead, I smoke pure, healthy tobacco.... Whatever.
