Yuji Itadori, a good-hearted adolescent, joins his school's Occult Club for fun, but soon realizes that its members are true sorcerers capable of manipulating the energy between creatures for their own gain. He learns about a cursed talisman - the finger of Sukuna, a demon - and how it is being sought after by other afflicted entities. Yuji eats the finger in order to protect his companions, and as a result, he becomes Sukuna's host. Yuji, on the other hand, realizes that he has inherited magic and is able to manage it without the involvement of Sukuna. He enrolls at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College in order to swallow all of Sukuna's fingers, allowing for a complete exorcism to take place, freeing him.
The narrative is set a year before Itadori's period, and focuses on his upperclassmen at Jujutsu High—Maki, Panda, Toge, and Yuta Okkotsu (the MC). We don't see Yuta in Jujutsu Kaisen, but other characters often mention him and the events in this book. Satoru Gojo has taken Yuta to Jujutsu High because his childhood friend, Rika, has cursed him. But this isn't just ordinary curse; she's been classed as Special Grade. Yuta doesn't know how to control or utilize her due of her overpowering strength. Meanwhile, Suguru Geto is on a mission to capture Yuta Okkotsu, notably Rika, to add to his own collection of cursed spirits that he controls, setting up a clash with his closest friend-turned-enemy, Gojo.
