Step 6Heat-sensitive pits can be found on the heads of venomous snakes (and some nonvenomous snakesâpythons, in particular). You can think of them as large scale nose-holes. They can be found near the nose and in a row on the upper or lower lip (not necessarily everywhere at the same time, as shown below). They allowed the snake to see the temperature (infrared light) in order to locate the warm body of its prey.
