When selecting a map, you should also consider the land vs. sea element. The less land you have available, the lower your population needs become. However, there is an accomplishment for having a population of 100,000 on consoles, so you may as well choose a map with a lot of territory. Make certain, however, that you have an appropriate water supply for your people and that your ports are connected. (I'm not concerned with dams, so I wouldn't bother with them unless you really want to.)
Simply draw a basic sketch of your structure and determine where the horizon line is (or would be if it is not visible). Then check for vanishing points and convergence lines (more on that in the above mentioned article). Do you have a one-point, two-point, or multi-point perspective? Is there a weather perspective? Are there any areas of your topic that overlap?
